College for Bears and Broken Monocle at WTA’s Gateway

Two of Central Virginia comedy improve groups will be featured at WTA’s Gateway on Saturday, May 26. The College for Bears will lead off the evening with Broken Monocle following.
The second half of the evening will be an improv challenge between the two with audience participation. Comedy Night begins at 8 p.m. at 329 West Main in Downtown Waynesboro. Read more
Shenandoah Valley Art Center Schedule: June 2012

The Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during the month of June, is exhibiting the works of SVAC member artists, in an exhibition judged by Jessica Martinkosky, Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at Blue Ridge Community College. The art center is proud that it is a community based organization that loves to showcase and support its talented members in this annual exhibition. The collection of artwork will feature the artists’ best efforts in a variety of media. An opening reception and awards ceremony will be held Thursday, June 7, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. and the public is encouraged to come and meet the artists. Read more

Children’s Summer Reading Program – Registration begins June 1st. “Dream Big, Read Big” at your library. This program is open to children and young adults of all ages and reading abilities. The store is back and full of books. Earn weekly prizes and library dollars by reading and spend those dollars in the library store. Participants earn one dollar per picture book or one dollar for every ten pages of a chapter book, once the book is checked in. You must be present at check-in to receive the dollars. The program store open June 16th through July 27th. Read more

Camp gives kids glimpse into life during Civil War

What was it like to be alive during the Civil War? Specifically, what was it like to be a kid during the Civil War?
“I think they often think that the things that we do today and the foods we eat and even the games we play … they think it’s new. A lot of it has been around for a long time, and we want the kids to learn that,” said Karen Church, who with Ellen Abernathy is organizing a living-history camp at the Plumb House Museum in Waynesboro that will take kids back in time.
